KanKan Privacy Policy
Last updated: June 10, 2026
KanKan ("the extension") is a Chrome extension that helps people learn Chinese while watching YouTube videos. This policy describes what data the extension handles. The short version: KanKan collects nothing.
Data collection
KanKan does not collect, transmit, sell, or share any personal data or usage data. There are no analytics, no telemetry, no tracking pixels, and no remote logging of any kind. The extension does not require an account.
Local storage
Words you save, your review progress, and your onboarding preferences (level estimate and interests) are stored locally in your browser using Chrome's extension storage. This data never leaves your device. Uninstalling the extension deletes it.
Network requests
The extension reads subtitle data for the YouTube video you are watching, directly from YouTube, in your own browser session — the same data YouTube's player uses to show captions. The bundled Chinese-English dictionary (CC-CEDICT, licensed CC BY-SA 4.0) ships inside the extension and is looked up entirely offline. The extension contacts no servers of its own.
Permissions
- storage — saves your word list and settings locally.
- youtube.com content script — renders the subtitle panel on YouTube watch pages.
Changes
If a future version ever changes any of the above (for example, optional cloud sync), this policy will be updated first and the change will be clearly announced in the extension's release notes.
